“So can you explain what this means?”

“It means that she’s willing to share custody as long as you meet the guidelines listed here.” I continued reading the list of requirements, most of which were sensible, however there were a few that would pose a problem. Thomas had already explained his living situation, and his income was limited. Having a record meant his hands were tied when it came to job security and comparable salaries.

“So that means I have to have my own place with a separate bedroom for my daughter. How the hell am I supposed to do that? I barely make ten dollars an hour. What little I have goes to food, transportation back and forth to work and the room I’m renting. This is bullshit. She knows I can’t meet these demands.”

“I agree. It’s a tactic that some lawyers advised their clients to use so that they don’t have to wear the label of being the unreasonable parent. On the surface, it appears that she’s being reasonable and attempting to work with you, however what she’s really doing is setting you up to fail so that she can then turn around and demand full custody.”

His shoulders deflated in defeat while his chest swelled in frustration. “That little girl is my entire world, man. I don’t have much that I’ve done right in my life, but with her, I did. She’s good, so damn perfect. I just want her in my life. I want to raise her to know that she’s loved and not a got damn bargaining tool. That’s all her mother sees when she looks at her.”

“We’ll figure this out. Let me make a few calls. There are services available that can help you get in a place of your own. Most of them cater to single mothers—”

“Then how the hell is that going to help me?” He grated, nostrils flaring.

“They’re not specific to only single mothers. That’s simply where the need typically lies, however, there are more cases like yours that have surfaced over time. More fathers are stepping up to do right by their kids, which has created a need for these programs to extend beyond just single mothers. There’s a list here at the rec center. Let me do a little digging and I’ll figure out what’s next.”

“How fast? They’re only giving me thirty days to do all that.” He pointed to the papers which had been tossed on my desk when he came barreling in like an agitated storm half an hour ago, seeking to destroy anything in his path that threatened to keep his daughter from him.

“That I can’t guarantee, but it’s possible. Again, let me do some digging.” I lifted a notepad and tossed it his way along with a pen. “Give me a number. Your cell preferably. I’ll need the quickest way to reach you and if I call, you answer. No matter what. The spaces are limited, and they go quickly.”

“Got it.” He leaned forward and scribbled out his number before he stood and scrubbed both palms down his face.
